Nature’s advocate, Bridging ecology with GIS data

I’ve always been fascinated by the power of maps to tell stories – what started as a childhood love for cartography turned into a deeper interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) whilst I was studying BSc Geography at Sussex University. While working on my dissertation, I really began to appreciate how digital mapping and spatial data could be used to uncover patterns and drive meaningful insights. Since graduating in 2022, I’ve continued to build on my skills and knowledge – learning how to transform, digitise and analyse geospatial data to produce clear, compelling visual outputs.

In truth, I’m happy in the outdoors and my passion for ecology and conservation stems from my two nature-loving parents who raised me with a deep appreciation for wildlife – I was lucky to grow up next to a local nature reserve in southeast London and have the opportunity to volunteer with Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) trust.

I’m particularly motivated by projects that sit at the intersection of environmental sustainability and spatial analysis, whether it’s supporting Net Zero initiatives, improving active travel infrastructure, or tackling flood risk through smart drainage planning.

I joined CJ Founds Associates at their GIS Technician in 2023, part time to begin with whilst juggling long hours in hospitality in Brighton. It was a great fit and early projects with some of our clients made it clear how GIS data mapping added value to the client, so after six-months I was taken on full time and pulled my last pint in return for the start of an exciting career.

GIS data mapping adds value to the team projects across digital infrastructure projects, highways and transport, place making and planning. From identifying flood risk areas and being able to pinpoint efficiencies through data to exploring new initiatives such as rooftop mapping and supporting spatial planning applications.

What’s not to love!
